Or any where to find any good drum and bass? Music-meets-film-meets-music in this anything but average acoustic show - Bob Wiseman w/Magali Meagher of The Phonemes @ Ruta Maya Coffee House June 15 Posted by starriderinfo Tuesday, 2007-June-05 Music-Meets-Film-Meets-Music In This Unique Twist
On The One-Man Show Starring Bob Wiseman,
Along With Magali Meagher of The Phonemes
At Ruta Maya Coffee House, Friday, June 15 “Wiseman is a latter-day Glenn Gould” Etch Magazine (Detroit, MI) “Keyboard player Bob Wiseman shines throughout” Penthouse Magazine “Amazing virtuoso work on the keyboards” Montreal Gazette “Cult favorite Bob Wiseman...” L. A. Reader “Absolutely Chilling” Flagpole Magazine (Athens, GA) With the advent of myspace and countless music delivery websites, the internet has created a monster. That being every other kid on the block who wants to be a rock star – resulting in thousands upon thousands of singer/songwriters passing off derivative of derivative music--over and over again. And that is why I love Bob Wiseman. What you see at a Bob Wiseman show is actually an entertaining show. This is not another try-to-keep-from-yawning while the self-absorbed guy strums his acoustic and attempts to “touch” the audience with his “heartfelt” ballads type show. This is music-meets-film-meets-music, as Bob accompanies some of his short films with his songs and vice versa. This show is a compelling, delightful, funny yet still touching and far-too-short event during which it is guaranteed you will: -laugh at Bob’s visual interpretation of his last break-up while he’s expressing the anguish musically -marvel at the interviewees on-screen as they interpret drum sounds verbally -find yourself deciding never to leave Bob a phone message again for fear of becoming film fodder -be tickled at the cameo appearance of “Kids In The Hall’s” Scott Thomson. Bob is a musician/actor/filmmaker with a resume one lanky arm long. This formidable multi-artistic individual, formerly of The Hidden Cameras and Blue Rodeo, was actually born in what they refer to in the Far East as “The Year-Of-The-Cat-That-Constantly-Wants-To-Go-Out-Then-Wants-To-Come-In.” Though he claims to not believe in astrology, a brief glance at his career reveals 9 records released on Warner Bros., Atlantic, Bar/None and now the Blocks Recording Club; 14 short films (and counting); production for Ron Sexsmith, Edie Brickell and “Kids In The Hall” wunderkind Bruce McCulloch; and collaborating with KITH wunderkindkind Scott Thompson and musician/writer/ one-time political candidate Maggie MacDonald. His latest record, Theme And Variations, was a cumulative meditation about his area of expertise—ex-girlfriends. Opening for Bob is his equally talented partner in crime, Magali Meagher, headmistress of Toronto band The Phonemes. With just her Gibson SG and her smoky juxtaposing voice, Ms. Meagher displays her respect for rubato, confidently filling the room and captivating her audience with songs that are juxtaposing—haunting yet humorous, clever and sweet. Like her renaissance hubby, Magali is continually writing and recording soon-to-be-classic songs, playing drums and singing with Blocks labelmates Hank, and was the star in author Maggie MacDonald’s rock opera “The Rat King,” which will be remounted in New York City in August. The Phonemes’ first full-length CD, There's Something We've Been Meaning To Do was released this year. Produced by Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Silver Mount Zion), it also features the ubiquitous wunderkind Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, Arcade Fire, Hidden Cameras, etc.).
