Austin Bella Corda Guitar Concert
Posted by childbloom   •   Thursday, 2007-September-20
Austin Bella Corda, a group of award winning young guitarists, will perform in concert at the Hyde Park Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 P.M. This talented young ensemble consists of eight middle and high-school musicians between the ages of 11 and 17. When asked to describe the group’s music, Kevin Taylor, who directs the group says, “They break the mold – Renaissance, Afropop, American Folk and World music – all artistically done and although they are all classically trained, hardly traditional ‘classical.’ There is nothing quite like this group”. Taylor’s sentiments are echoed by Professor Mark Cruz, head of the guitar department at Texas State University. He says, “It is a rare thing to hear a young and gifted guitarist. To hear more than one is an enormous delight. Hearing Bella Corda is an invitation to something fresh and exciting and delivers promise to the future of classical guitar.” The members of the group are all from the Central Texas area. They are Owen Hunter, 17; Kevin Mullin, 17; Nick Harrell, 14; Anna MacDonald, 14; Eliot Wilde, 15; Ryan Voldstad, 15; Tyler Rhodes, 13; and Rachel Nayer, 11. Wilde, Voldstad, Mullin, Hunter and Rhodes are all competition winners and are among the best guitarists in the nation. Although Austin Bella Corda has performed numerous concerts around Central Texas, and has opened for international artists Michael Chapdelaine and the Hanser/McClellan Guitar Duo in Austin, this upcoming event is their first Austin solo concert. They recently performed at the Eastfield Festival in Dallas, where reviewer Jason Boyd said, “The ensemble, Austin, Bella Corda, were amazing ... they blew me away. With respect, I say their program entertained me more than some of the more renowned classical performers. The young musicians play with an emotional sensibility way beyond their years.” Tickets are $8 and available at the door. Seating is limited so tickets can be reserved by calling 452-8765
