Chris Brecht and the Dead Flowers @ the Saxon Pub July 21 10PMVideos and Music at www.myspace.com/chrisbrecht visit MYSPACE When Chris Brecht moved to Texas from Colorado a few years back, he landed in an $18 a night St. Elmo Motel filled with drunks, whores, and crackheads – until that fateful day he met guitarist Brad Rice, recorded "Night Highway 99" and got radio airplay and real gigs. Two years later Brecht finished work on The Great Ride, of which the Seattle Weekly says: In a lazy drawl that sounds like a hybrid cross between Ryan Adams' soulful North Carolina slur and Bob Dylan's off-pitch, nasal mutterings, Austin songwriter Chris Brecht croons about trains, lost love and the nomadic life with the same passion and timeless appeal of greats from Woody Guthrie to Willie Nelson. Brecht says he still "sings my songs in strange towns," traveling by highway and train and sleeping on sofas and staying in slightly better motels. "It was when I had no money that I decided that music is what I am supposed to do. I go out there, coffee blooded and in the back of the night, playing shows for the sake of my soul because I have songs like "Lost Highway" and "Says an Orphan" that I want people to hear." Brecht’s passion for the road took him "By Train" to five cities in Washington and Oregon in February and all across that "hot ass desert frying pan of a state" called Texas – from historic venues like Gruene Hall, Antone’s, and the Continental Club to newer stages like Conroe’s Corner Pub and Greek Bros. in El Campo (where he opened for Bruce Robison). Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is the greatest exponent of the
bamboo flute today. His musical journey began in Allahabad,
an Indian holy city by the banks of the Ganges. The son of
a wrestler, his early lifestyle seemed to be preparing him
to follow his father, with early morning dips in the Ganges,
a strict regimen of physical fitness and wrestling at the
local gymnasium. A career in music, let alone ascension to
the ranks of the greatest musicians, seemed remote.
What muse drew young Hariprasad to the flute is a mystery -
his family expected him to take up something more ìmanly,î
like wrestling, or if he failed at that, herding cattle.
Perhaps it was the river that cast its spell. Regardless,
the flute that he stole as a child to make his own was to
change his life forever. The hard struggle to make
something of his talent then followed. His formal learning
was at the feet of several masters of the Indian classical
tradition, the greatest of them being Annapurna Devi, the
daughter and disciple of the legendary Ustad Allaudin Khan.
His journey has since taken him all over the globe with
performances in all major music centers and festivals in
all major continents. He has established schools to teach
music, including the Vrindaban Charitable Trust in Bombay,
India and the Brindavan Gurukul, Inc., in the United States.
He has also been the Head of the Indian Music Department
at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory for over a decade now.
The Government of India bestowed upon him its second-highest
civilian honor, and he has been hailed by fans around the
world as the ìBansuri Samraat,î or ìEmperor of the Flute.î
At the end of it all, though, Chaurasia is inseparable from
his art - he is the flute, and the flute is him. His titles
are many and the accolades for his music overflow with
adjectives, but everyone who has heard him is convinced that
the descriptions are, if anything, understated. A critic
described his music thus: ìÖ reminiscent of a sage in deep
meditation, a young mother with her child, a river flowing
gently Öyou will be completely mesmerized.î
